I don’t get MTV

Sure it’s last weeks news that TRL will be going off the air.  It’s the end of an era blah blah blah. But my  confusion in this is related to the M in MTV. Is this the end of MTV and it’s former association with music? This was the only program that contained music videos left on the network. And those were only clips of said videos. So what’s after this, more reality TV?

I don’t really get it.
