I am in desperate need of advice!!!! I left LA in mid February after having a mental breakdown. I was living in Santa Monica with one of my friends and a girl she knew from work. Girl from work was ok at first until she said she was all about going to playboy parties and being a hooters girl. She’ll come into the picture later. So anyway I packed up my things and left. I told the chicks I would continue to pay rent because I wanted to get out of there so fast. Well I have been paying rent but it is seriously killing me. It’s almost 1000 bucks a month and I am unemployed at the moment. I emailed my “friend” and she said she would look into it. A month later, no response so I emailed her again and she gave me some lame excuse like oh we had someone come in but she was loony so she didn’t work out. So I posted an ad on craigslist to get some help and told her about it. Well after a bunch of emails back and forth she totally went back on what she told me she was doing. I told her my personal shit going on, like hospital bills, being unemployed, etc. She turned it around on me and told me I gave her my word. Her excuse for not having someone move in was because she would feel uncomfortable. Like don’t you have any sympathy? The next email I got from her was telling me she didn’t want our friendship ruined so she was going to get playboy playmate to handle it. Days later I get an email from horseface aka playmate and she informs me I must pay the rent and then threatened me by saying she was going to take it to small claims court. Fucking bitch. I have been in touch with my landlord to have some peeps come look at it and now all of a sudden he sends me an email telling me he spoke with my roomates and that it would be in my best interest to pay the rent. I am so fucking fed up. I have never truly hated anyone in my life until now. I wanted to know if anyone else has been in a similiar situation and how they handled it. Pleaseeeee help!
Did you sign any documents?
well if you aren’t on the lese and didnt sign any contracts just stop paying there is no proof of your financial obligation to pay. on the other hand if you did then you ned to gt your name taken off if they charge you some ridiculous fee that wasn’t included in the contract then take his asss to court. then take your friends to court to recoup the money. do you gt receipts for making payments? your going to need those as proff. and in the future dont do that kind of shit again it doesn’t pay to be nice.
I haven’t been in a similar situation, but I have had my fair share of landlords, and violate is right: you need to get your name taken off the lease. Check your contract to see what the fee is for breaking your lease (are you on a lease or a month to month rental basis?) Because if you are on a lease then you will probably have to pay a fee (mine is 300.00 for example) but that would be a helluva lot better than paying rent forever!

Legally, I think if you give your roommates a month’s notice and/or find a suitable replacement you shouldn’t have to pay more than one months rent. If you are still on the lease, you are financially responsible until you’re off the lease, so tell that ass landlord that you haven’t been living there and need to be removed from the lease, pay that fee, and get the hell out of that situation!
dizamn! i think you’ve done these girls quite the favor already. like olivia said, really all you owe them is a month’s notice–there’s no reason that six months later, they couldn’t very easily find a new roommate. don’t let any of these clowns threaten you. tell the landlord that if you’re on the lease, to take you off. and if you’re not, i’d tell hooters they’ve gotten a free ride off of you long enough, and to stop contacting you. sounds like it’s time to get mean and cold with these bitches.
